Enzymatic cleaners are typically safer and more environmentally-friendly than cleaners that rely on more caustic primary ingredients. These enzymes, produced by beneficial bacteria, are especially good for cat and other pet stains because they target organic compounds common to urine, vomit, and feces. The stain and the smell were completely eliminated leaving behind a subtle scent of eucalyptus and mint.īubba's Rowdy Friends Pet Stain & Odor Terminator is an enzymatic cleaner, which means it uses proteins that accelerate chemical reactions, in this case by breaking down the components of a stain, such as the ammonia crystals in cat urine. Per the instructions, we allowed the undiluted cleaner to saturate the stain for one hour, then rinsed it with water, and hung it up to air dry. We used this cleaner to tackle a set-in stain from cat pee on a faux fur rug and weeks later the stench has not returned. Our favorite after testing is Bubba's Rowdy Friends Pet Stain & Odor Terminator, which provides effective stain and smell removal-on both new and set-in stains-on household surfaces, leaving behind the faint scent of mint and eucalyptus. They gave us feedback in multiple categories, taking notes about how well each cleaner managed odors, cleaned up urine, and erased set-in stains. Based on our findings, we sent 17 of our favorite stain removers to volunteer testers to try at home with their cats. We tested dozens of odor and stain-removing products in our Des Moines Lab. The right cleaner can keep an incident from becoming a habit. Regardless of the cause, it's essential to clean cat stains and remove odors from carpet, rugs, and other surfaces, so that your cat doesn't begin to treat the spot as a bathroom. If we use a constructor to initialize values inside a class, we need to pass the corresponding value during the object creation of the class. We have used the self.name to refer to the name attribute of the bike1 object. The constructor above initializes the value of the name attribute. Here, _init_() is the constructor function that is called whenever a new object of that class is instantiated. However, we can also initialize values using the constructors. Don’t assume a child who spends a lot of time in the nurse’s office at school is doing it intentionally to get out of class. But it’s important to understand that kids aren’t necessarily inventing their symptoms, and the danger may feel very real to them. Domingues assures children that these symptoms are not harmful - they’re just their emergency system responding to a false alarm. You don’t want to be digesting food at that moment because you’re trying to either flee danger or fight danger.”ĭr. ![]() For instance, she says, “your stomach hurts because your digestive system is shutting down to send blood to other areas of your body. When she talks to kids about anxious headaches or stomach aches, she explains the role of each. All of them have a purpose, notes Janine Domingues, PhD, a clinical psychologist at the Child Mind Institute. In fact anxiety is associated with a host of physical symptoms, including headaches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, along with a racing heart, shakiness or sweating - symptoms older people experience when they’re having a panic attack.Īll these physical symptoms are related to the fight-or-flight response triggered when the brain detects danger. The therapist will likely use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help your child identify their anxiety and learn skills to reduce it. If your child’s anxiety makes daily life hard, they might have an anxiety disorder. It’s your emergency system responding to a false alarm.” This lets them know that what they’re feeling is normal and gives them a sense of control.Įventually, they’ll be able to say, “My stomach hurts and I remember that’s because I’m feeling worried.” Helping them practice getting through the anxiety is more helpful than letting them avoid the things they feel anxious about. With a majority of housewives entering the fulltime work force after the 1960s, there was no longer the (wo)man-power to keep such an organization active at its former pace. The Sigmas’ White Rose Luncheon became a highlight of the Grand Chapters, and their national newsletter, The Dial, kept all chapters in close contact.īut the Sigmas and many other women's auxiliaries would eventually fall victim to the changing times. ![]() At the 1957 Grand Chapter in Toronto, the Sigma Student Aid Loan Fund was established under the auspices of the Sigmas, with a purpose of providing financial assistance for Sigma Chi students in need. By then, the Sigmas had reached their zenith-42 chapters Fraternity-wide-and played an increasingly important role in Fraternity fundraising and other functions. Six years were to pass before the organization was to hold business meetings on the international level. The first international gathering of Sigmas occurred at the 39th Grand Chapter held in 1929 in Portland, Oregon, but the agenda of the Sigmas in attendance was purely social. Two months later The Sigmas of Sigma Chi was adopted as the organization's official name and, under that name, they were officially recognized as a legitimate service branch of the fraternity in 1925. The group was commended by the Fraternity during the 34th Grand Chapter, held in Des Moines, Iowa, in June of 1919. The constitution, prepared in part by Denver alumni chapter members Frank McDonough, Dartmouth 1907 George Joslyn, Colorado 1916 and George Loomis, Wisconsin 1886, states that the purpose of the group shall be to promote friendship among the members, contribute to the social lives of the alumni chapters, and emulate and exalt the ideals of the Fraternity. Only wives or widows of Sigma Chis were eligible for membership. The first insignia, later revised, was adopted on April 10, and a constitution and by-laws drawn up and approved two weeks later. Pop Henning, DePauw 1890, and his wife, the group gained a strong foothold, though it remained a Denver-area phenomenon for several years while the finer points of organization were worked out. With the blessing of then-Grand Consul William C. On March 29, 1918, nineteen of them met at Denver's Auditorium Hotel and formally organized the Alpha Chapter of the first Sigma Chi Auxiliary Society. Their meetings became more regular as they gathered to support the war effort. Until then, their lives had centered around Fraternity functions, but with the majority of their husbands overseas in uniform, it would be up to the women to keep the Sigma Chi spirit alive on the home front. With America's entry into World War I in April of 1917, these women were drawn even closer together. The close camaraderie of these women came to reflect the fraternal ties of their husbands and allowed for the same diversity: whether just out of school or old enough to have grandchildren, there was an unmistakable bond. ![]() The young wives of the newly-formed alumni chapter, hailing from states as far away as Pennsylvania and Virginia, had good reason to latch onto the common denominator that drew them all together: they relied largely on their husband's Sigma Chi connections for their friendships and their social life. The Beta Mu chapter of Sigma Chi had been originally chartered at the University of Colorado just four years earlier, and only a handful of the members were native Coloradoans. Colorado had been a state for a mere 42 years, and Denver, in addition to its natural beauty, still boasted an inviting frontier-like image which drew tourists, as well as new residents, from many parts of the country. It was 1918, two years before the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which allowed women the right to vote. |
